Quiet Desperation

by Linda Sartain and Paul Whitwam

/

about

Over 150 years ago, philosopher and transcendentalist Henry David Thoreau penned these words, "The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation...But it is a characteristic of wisdom not to do desperate things." It seems an applicable quote today as society grapples with so much unrest.

Special thanks to Paul Whitwam drooble.com/paul.whitwam for his appearance and audio engineering on this track.

lyrics

Quiet desperation
The majority of men, the majority of men lead lives of quiet desperation
Lord, keep me from thinking too much!
My great expectations
Are in a state of confused speculation.
Now, am I in or out of touch?
It's a really precarious world staring back at me
And I've gotta hold on to something, but I just can't see.
(improv: Dut dut'n, do do...Gotta play it cool, gotta play it cool, mm hm.)

Frequent contemplation
of my unsteady life situation
keeps me on my toes continually.
Now, don't get caught up in it. It's not healthy to fret every minute
And never take it personally.
It's a really nefarious world staring back at me.
And I've gotta hold onto something when I just can't see.
(Improv: Dut dut'n, do do...Gotta play it cool, gotta play it cool, mm hm.)

Looking out, looking in, not really knowing where to begin
Gotta stop second-guessing. I don't need to be impressing.
Am I really good enough? I've just gotta be a little more tough!
(Improv: Be a little more tough, so I can make it out there.)

You've just gotta believe you can make it every day.
Is there anybody out there who hears what I'm trying to say - hey, hey?
The majority of men, the majority of men lead lives of quiet desperation.
The majority of men, the majority of men could use some quiet consolation.
The majority of men, the majority of men in need of quiet restoration.
Improv: It's a long road, it's a tough life.
Oh, people in the world are having a hard time now
Everybody needs some quiet restoration.
Everybody needs a little relaxation, a little consolation.
You gotta be - lieve - in what you know.
(Spoken) "The majority of people in the world - they're tense inside. We all need to - like - relax and - chill."
Hold on, hold on.
Quiet, quiet restoration.
