Loveliest of Trees

A musical setting of A. E. Housman's classic poem from his collection, A Shropshire Lad, published in 1896. While taking a walk to enjoy the beauty of cherry trees in spring, the writer acknowledges that the transient nature of life will soon deprive him of that opportunity. Gentle piano falls and warm strings accentuate the vocal line. Built on major 7th chords, the music accentuates the poetic theme by emphasizing the feeling of unfulfilled longing.

Loveliest of trees, the cherry now
Is hung with bloom along the bough,
And stands about the woodland ride
Wearing white for Eastertide.

Now of my threescore years and ten,
Twenty will not come again,
And take from seventy springs a score,
It only leaves me fifty more.

And since to look at things in bloom
Fifty springs are little room,
About the woodland I will go
To see the cherry hung with snow.
