Innocent No More

by Linda Sartain

/

about

An introspective piece, reconciling youthful expectations with the demands of real life. Inspired by a friend of mine who served in the Vietnam war, came home and raised children, ran a business and lost it, touched hundreds of lives in his community and gave up too soon. I always remember him with love and respect for the sense of community, loyalty and friendship he instilled in me.

lyrics

Time was when I was young
A child playing at my mother's feet
The backyard where I would play and run
The old, familiar comfort of our street
A time of innocence
Of friendships loyal and true
A time of dreaming
When I grow up, where I'll be and what I'll do.

Time has a way of marching on
Of teaching things we'd rather never learn
Tears, pain and worry, right and wrong
Sorrow, fear and unmet dreams that burn.
The careless days of childhood
The wild, sweet abandonment of youth
Disappear in responsible adulthood
And weariness, reality and truth.

So I learn what it means to face the grind
To suffer, and yet find the grace to try again
To live by faith, and smile and carry on
To have a sense of humor now and then
So Time, teach me now to laugh
To hope still when facing grief and loss
To trust in the God whose strength I have
To be my help in carrying my cross.

Innocent no more
But student still of grace
A soldier, battling with Time
Still hopeful of a better resting place.
Innocent no more
But earnestly I seek
The promise of a brighter day
Of reconciliation and peace.
