Huron Carol Fantasia

about

One of the few Christmas carols that originated in North America, the Huron Carol hails from the Huron-Wyandot people of Canada and dates from the seventeenth century. The tune is based on a traditional French folk song, "Une Jeune Pucelle"; the lyrics are attributed to Jean de Brébeuf, a Jesuit missionary who lived among the Hurons in the 1600's. Brébeuf set the text, retelling the Christmas story in the native language of the Huron-Wyandot people. The English translation was written in 1926 by Jesse Edgar Middleton and fell into the public domain in 2011.

My arrangement features a vocal ensemble portraying the angels' announcement of the birth of Jesus, set in the form of a fantasia with a lush piano-and-strings keyboard backdrop.

lyrics

'Twas in the moon of wintertime
When all the birds had fled
That mighty Gitchi-Manitou* sent angel choirs instead.
Before the light the stars grew dim
And wondering hunters heard the hymn,
"Jesus your King is born
Jesus is born, in excelsis gloria."

Within a lodge of broken bark
The tender Babe was found
A ragged robe of rabbit skin
Enwrapped his beauty round.
And as the hunter braves drew nigh
The angel chorus filled the sky
"Jesus your King is born
Jesus is born, in excelsis gloria"

O children of the forest free
O sons of Manitou
The Holy Child of heaven and earth
Is born this day for you.
Come kneel before the radiant Boy
Who brings you beauty, peace and joy
Jesus your King is born
Jesus is born, in excelsis gloria.

*Algonquian name for Great Spirit. This name is not from the Huron-Wyandot original text, but was borrowed from the Algonquian language by Jesse Edgar Middleton for his English translation.
